Fredericksburg Caroline St

Fredericksburg Caroline St

Well I’m back home again. This was a pricey trip, between the new phone and the new battery. Because I wasn’t watching closely, the bank hit me for 4 overdrafts for that stupid battery in one day. Can’t figure that one out at all! Anyway I was going to close the account if that’s the way they want to behave, but I talked to a manager and got 3 of them refunded. I don’t mind paying a fee if I screw up, but it really amazes me how quickly they can stiff you on this stuff.

I’m not feeling as spiritually refreshed as I did on the last trip. Guess I need to read better books instead of murder mysteries. Money issues can mess up my spiritual condition in a heartbeat also. So I’d better get busy and sell some stuff, I guess.

I went to the barter networking meeting and did manage to sell some angels on barter and some angels for cash…whew…that ‘s a start. Got some big barter orders as well. One lady wants 25 sets of coasters for September for goodie bags at a conference. Sold a few more angels and a sunface. The best news was getting in a store downtown that I really love and wanted to be in for a long time called DuJardin. Beautiful things and she loves my work which is always a plus. She didn’t take too much for now but placed a big order for September. If I can just hold out until late summer I think I’ll be okay.

Got to figure out what I’m going to do about a van and a place to work once the house is sold. A friend’s husband said he’ll keep an eye out for a cargo van for me. I did find a storage place to rent on barter, but it’s too far away to use as shop space on a regular basis.

I am going to have to start paring down stuff to get ready to move. Then I have to figure out where to go in August. This move really screwed up my schedule. I want to be here for Thanksgiving and Christmas, so it’s kind of late to start the trek west. Maybe I’ll just go north for a bit, possibly Canada eventually, so I guess I’d better deal with the passport issue. I want to see Nova Scotia and would like to revisit Montreal.

Years ago when the kids were young we took a cross country trip with a tent camper. We drove out to Nebraska to see my family and then up through Canada on the way back. I decided to go through Quebec but didn’t really grasp ahead of time that all the street signs would be in French. I had no clue and was pulling the damn trailer with 3 kids in the car and it was just plain scary, so I got out of there as fast as I could. I’d love to go back by myself where I could just meander at will. It’s really a beautiful city. Maybe I can get French lessons on tape to listen to in the van while I drive.

I’m so jealous of Carolyn being in Glacier Nat’l Park in MT. That’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to go but never got farther than Bozeman. I guess I’ll have to wait on that until next summer. I don’t think I can go that far and still get back by Thanksgiving. For now I’m sticking close to home. Off to St. Michael’s MD on Sunday to see my other daughter Melanie. LOOOOOve St. Michaels.

Can’t believe I got gas at Sheetz in Harrisonburg VA for $3.09! Wow!

Drove downtown for another look and stopped at the visitor’s center. Those ladies were so helpful and told me lots of places to call on. Did not get to talk to owners and any of them, but got contact info for making appointments. One of the ladies who worked at one was verrrrry interested and thinks my things will be great for the store. The owner has two stores so that’s even better. I loved this sign I saw on the side wall of a coffee shop in downtown Harrisonburg. People had written their dreams in chalk on it. What a cool idea.

Decided to head on back to Staunton, my favorite place on this trip and was rewarded for it. Signed a lovely home decor store on Main Street called Arthur’s. Wonderful couple owns it and we had such fun visiting. Nancy used to be an interior designer also, so we kibbitzed about how stressful it was…

Down the mountain again and heading home. Stopped in Charlottesville again and decided to try the Boar’s Head Inn, where the buyer was really interested but needs to wait until July. That seems to be the story of this trip…oh well.

I watch an older gentleman with Alzheimers once a month so his wife can go to Garden Club. Sweetest people. We usually watch Dancing with the Stars together. Anyway I just make it home 15 minutes before I have to be there. Whew!

Wow glad I don’t have a big rig to take care of. After running my battery down 3 times in the last 2 months, it finally gave up the ghost yesterday. Ran fine to get to Walmart – I came out and it was dead. Grabbed a guy to jump it and got to the park and it died while I was parking. some sweetie pie park guys jumped it again – took lots longer this time – and followed me to a battery store for a new one. The guys there tested it, installed a reconditioned one since I’m trading in the van soon and put it all in for $42. How lucky was that.

Yesterday I finally walked through the pedestrian mall in the sunshine and it was beautiful. Two of the stores I wanted to call on are closed, but I got info. Turns out one is closing and I’m not sure the other ever opens. I did talk to someone at the third store and got info about the owner to make an appointment, but that’s as far as I got.  On the road again back down south.

Finally leaving Leesburg as much as I love it I must move on. Tried to take a nap in my favorite parking lot and had a nice young policeman come along and ask if I was living in my van. I said I was traveling in my van and he asked for my license to see if I was a pervert or anything. He came back and said I wasn’t wanted and I told him it was really sad not to be wanted, so the sweet young thing said it was not good to be wanted the way they would want me. Oh well. He said it was okay to stay the night there ..I already stayed 2 nights anyway but I didn’t tell him that…but I just felt there was nothing more in Leesburg to hold my interest, so I decided I would mosey up to Charles Town WV and see what the casinos were all about that they keep shouting about on TV.

I have never seen anything so prominent identified so little. I had to ask 3 people when I got to town where the casino was. It’s actually another beautiful little historic town but it was kinda late so nothing was open. I finally found the casino and race track which is huge and hard to miss if you know where you’re going. I tried out a few spots to sleep and they were too noisy, so I saw a camper with some middle aged folks in it and asked if I could huddle up behind them and they said yes, but this crazy looking guy drove over and was hanging out so I left and found another spot. they could still see me from where they were and knew I was a woman alone, so I felt pretty safe. It wasn’t so bad actually. Slept soundly and woke up okay, but after driving through town, I realized it was not a place for my stuff so I moved on up to Harper’s Ferry.

Harper's Ferry

Harper’s Ferry

Harper’s Ferry is one of my favorite places. If any of you western ladies have been to Eureka Springs, you will know how it is. Even though it was kinda where the Civil War started I’m not so interested in wars. This whole area is thick with Civil War sites. I practically live across the street from a battleground, and friends get all involved in the reinactments. Wars just don’t appeal to me, so I don’t visit the sites. They are usually just a big field with a cannon sitting on them anyway so I really don’t know what the big deal is.

Anyway I took a ton of pictures because everything there is so cool. It’s all built up on the mountains and there’s barely a sidewalk. They have a bus that will bring you into town although I had hoped it would take you around town, but it didn’t. Steep, steep walking.

Met a guy sitting on the curb with a help me sign who lost his money while hiking, so I gave him some string cheese. There but for the grace of God… No stores for me here either but well worth the trip to see it again…it’s probably been 20 years since I’ve been there.

Heading back to Winchester where at least it’s sunny this time instead of pouring down rain. Think I’ll go back to camp on Skyline Drive this trip. I even have a fire starter now and maybe if it’s during the week I can go to the bigger campgounds that have a shower.

Crap!!! Just looked at the forecast and it looks like rain this week. Maybe have to rethink my plans. That’s the nice thing about van dwelling. You can change plans any time, or maybe just hunker down and read a good book.
