About a year ago my dear friend Pamela asked me to paint a tree in her meditation space. Well, here we are a year later and I’m finally done. It was intended to be a lot different than it ended up. Originally I was just going to paint a trunk on the little angled wall in the middle and paint a large canvas of leaves to put on the ceiling…since I ain’t no Michelangelo lying on my back painting a ceiling.
After we finally got around to it a couple weeks ago the whole idea of it changed. We bought a big 9 x 12 canvas tarp and stapled it to the walls. Pamela wanted to take the canvas with her if she ever moved, so that’s why I didn’t paint directly on the wall. After that we primed it and base coated the ceiling and top of the wall blue and the base of it green, and the paint stuck it to the wall. I will state categorically that I am not typically a landscape painter, so that, along with the challenge of painting something at this scale, was a little daunting.
Anyway it is finished now and so I’ll post some pics for you. I have to say that because of the angle of the room and the position that you have to stand in to take a picture it looks a little weird. I have included a little floor plan so you can see how the layout actually is. When you look at the photo, the lake looks like it is pouring down at an angle and that’s just the angle of perspective from my vantage point with the camera. I promise the water is level as all water should be;)
Pamela wanted the tree to envelope her in her meditations. She is thrilled but we have talked about the squatiness of the tree and feel it needs to go up on the ceiling to make it taller. At this point that will be a lot trickier than it would have been in the original concept. Unfortunately she is leaving today for Hawaii and I am leaving on my trip before she gets back so changing it may have to wait until I get back next fall, so that will give me plenty of time to figure it out.
We hadn’t trimmed the bottom yet when this was taken. the trunk is positioned in the little angle wall between the two bigger walls. She has a friend she has been showing picture of it to so I may have another job before I leave town. I want to leave now but it would be better to have some extra cash available. We’ll see.
Jenny, This is beautiful! Someday I want one!
I’ll be there in the fall. Just pick a spot!
This looks really great!!! Not at all what I was expecting!
Thanks. The concept changed a lot when we got down to doing it.
what a wonderful place to have in your room. love it.
